Civray info

Civray is a small market town in the heart of the Poitou-Charentes region. It sits on the banks of the river Charente where the water passes as slowly as the pace of life. There are plenty of restaurants and bars within easy reach of Chez Robineau.

The restaurant in the Hotel du Commerce, in the centre of Civray, serves fine French cuisine with a selection of set menus offering good value, including a children's menu or à la carte if you prefer.  There are some good value restaurants at the camp site in Civray, an excellent restaurant at Luxé le Cheval Blanc (30 minutes drive) or if you want a special treat the Chateaux at Niueil has an outstanding restaurant in La Grange aux Oies (45 minutes drive).  We would especially recommend le Bouton d'Or for lunchtime value and if you like something very French.

Of course, there are lots more but these are the restaurants we have visited and generally recommend to our visitors. Some of these are now also reviewed on tripadvisor.fr - always worth a look.

Market Days

Civray's main market is held each Tuesday, with traders selling everything from pots and pans to ladies hats. The market starts at around 8.30am and most of the stallholders stay until around 12.30pm, with just a few reopening in the afternoon. There's a slightly smaller market on a Friday morning too.

On the 27th of every month, regardless of what day it falls, there's a market at Rouillac in the Charente. It's a large market including household goods, livestock and fresh produce. Well worth a visit if you happen to be around on the 27th.

Civray Night Market

Usually held the first Friday in August. Not the normal French market and you will usually find more in the way of local crafts, jewellery and clothes. It generally starts at around 6pm and continues through to around midnight. You'll also find the bars and cafes will stay open till late and the centre filled with stalls selling freshly cooked snacks, etc.

Fireworks

If you're lucky enough to be here at the right time of year, Civray has two firework displays: one on Bastille Day (14th July) and one normally near the end of August.
