Where we are on the map

Our two gîtes are near the small market town of Civray, about 50km South of Poitiers in Poitou-Charentes, South West France. The nearest channel ports are Saint-Malo and Le Havre, four to five hours drive away, with Calais and Boulogne maybe seven and a half to eight hours away, including stops.

Whether you choose to come to Chez Robineau by air or via the Channel is very much a personal choice: both methods are used by our guests in roughly equal numbers. Here are some thoughts should you be wondering which you might enjoy the most.

Car all the way

The Calais ferry port and Eurotunnel are from 7 hours away, depending on traffic and how many breaks you wish to take. All the other channel ports are 4-5 hours away. Some of our guests do the journey from home in a single day, others choose to have an overnight stay en route for a more relaxed approach. We are only 12 km / 8 miles from the N10 dual carriageway, so only a few minutes on ordinary roads at the start or end of your journey. There'll be plenty of time to explore the quiet lanes and villages once you are here.

Tolls from Calais/Eurotunnel are about €70 each way [as of 1st February 2024], if you choose to keep to the motorways and avoid Paris; tolls from Le Havre are not much less, but from Saint-Malo are about €16 each way.

By air

Our two local airports are Poitiers and Limoges. Both are small and quiet affairs, so no route marches to and from the plane or long transfers to pick up hire cars. Poitiers has flights from London Stansted and Edinburgh (plus Lyon); Limoges has flights from Bristol, East Midlands, Leeds-Bradford, London Gatwick, London Stansted and Manchester (plus Lyon). Both airports are a simple journey to Chez Robineau, taking a little under, or a little over an hour for Poitiers and Limoges respectively.

For a wider choice of routes or dates, our guests have also used Bordeaux and La Rochelle airports. Whilst these are further, at just under 2 hours driving time each, they are of course both major tourist destinations in their own right. This opens up the option of adding a day or two in these places at the beginning or end of your holiday.

None of the airports mentioned require the use of toll roads, and most of the routes are dual carriageway "N" roads, the equivalent of British trunk roads.
