A classic car meet in Civray

Civray is a small market town in the heart of the old Poitou-Charentes region. The two main focal points are the river Charente and the market square. The journey from Chez Robineau to Civray is only 5 minutes by car, 10 minutes by bicycle or 30 minutes on foot along a quiet country lane. There is lots of free parking in the centre of town.

We have weekly markets on Tuesdays and Fridays : both have a wide range of local and seasonal food, and on Tuesdays there is also more general merchandise. The first Sunday of each month brings an artisan market to town, usually accompanied by a display by local classic car owners.

We have multiple bakers and butchers in town, as well as a wide range of banks, a chemist, newsagent and bookshop, health and beauty practitioners, a jeweller and an antique shop. Meanwhile, on the outskirts of town you will find 4 different supermarkets (Lidl and Aldi, as well as French names) and other businesses.

Local Dining

Civray and the surrounding villages offer a wide range of cafés (French and English), bars and restaurants. Here are some of our favourites:

Civray & Savigné

Ô City'Ven - modern French bistro, always a choice of dishes.

Hotel du Commerce - a large riverside terrace, home-made and locally sourced food.

Le Rivage Civraisien - riverside campsite restaurant, with music evenings.

Bar au Boulot - a large and welcoming sports bar with big screen TVs and pool tables.

Local villages

Village Flotant, Pressac - pontoon dining on a lake, with a varied menu.

Le Salamandre, Lizant - popular bar with pizzas, burgers and more.

La Senachalerie, Verteuil-sur-Charente - characterful restaurant with chateau views.

Auberge d'Argentor, Nanteuil-la-Vallée - in the centre of delightful half timbered village.

There are also a number of food trucks that operate in the area. We try hard to keep abreast of what all the current offerings are and can make recommendations according to your tastes.

Activities & Events in Civray

A park runs alongside the river for several hundred metres, offering lots of open space for shaded walks and paddling opportunities. The younger and more adventurous locals jump in and swim too. In addition, you will find children's play equipment and a fitness trail. The park is also the home to the Bastille Day brocante (antiques fair) and fireworks display, and the 3-day music festival Au Fil du Son.

There's a sports complex on the island in the middle of the river in town, with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a sauna, hammam and gym.

Our single-screen cinema shows films in French and in English, usually with two or three showings of different films each day : we place the current programme in each gîte throughout the season.

Finally there are a number of other events in and around the town centre, examples in recent years being an overnight halt for the Tour de l'Avenir cycle race, street art festivals, summer evening markets and so on. For the latest information, ask us or try the friendly tourist office in the town centre.
